Chapter 18
When we all meet up for a drink and dinner, Monday after work, Leo brings up a trip to Belleau Wood, France so I could drink from the historic Devil Dog Fountain, and visit the Aisne-Marne American Cemetery, and the Marine Monument. The guys were all in agreement that we would need to take an extra couple of days and continue into Paris. Since we would be so close, they thought it would be a travesty to not visit.
We make plans to go in three weeks, departing on a Thursday morning and returning on Sunday. That way we can spend all of Saturday in Paris. With plans made, Archie will arrange the transportation and Frideric will get the hotels reserved for the group. I just need to get the time scheduled off from work.
We say goodbye to the guys and head to my apartment. Leo and I crash on the couch with the television on but continue to talk about my trip to Frankfurt and the upcoming trip to France. About an hour later, Leo needs to go, as he has an early morning meeting on Tuesday.
Sleep eludes me all night. I crawl out of bed Tuesday morning, dreading the day. My normal breakfast and run to work do not improve my mood whatsoever. So, when every project I am involved with goes south, I figure it is par for the course, and my mood darkens further. By Thursday morning, Iâm in a foul mood, and nothing seems to help it. I havenât talked with Leo since he went home Monday evening, and our texts have been few and far between. Luckily, things at work start to look up that afternoon and delivery dates are agreed upon that will keep our production line from falling behind schedule.
Everyone is insistent that I join them for our regular dinner and drinks after work since we have gotten things sorted and back on track. I am so exhausted; I just want to go home. And the concern of not hearing from Leo is weighing heavily on my mind. But Otto and Sascha are so insistent that I go. I finally agree to go with them. Otto gives me a ride and we stop by my apartment to drop off my bag enroute.
By the end of the meal, I am glad that I joined the group. We are laughing and telling stories of our youth and of the mischievous things we had gotten into. The evening of laughing and joking does seem to lighten my mood, but Iâm still concerned about what is up with Leo.
Sascha drops me off at my apartment after dinner. I walk inside and drop my things right inside the door as Iâm turning on the light. I relock the door and head toward my room to get ready for bed. It has been a long day between the stressors at work and then the impromptu celebration of getting the material issues worked out where there isnât going to be an interruption in production.
